Vehicle documents and driving license allowed in digital format

The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to states, which now allows vehicle owners to present vehicle documents and driving license in a digital format. The vehicle owners can present documents via mobile apps like ‘Digilocker’ and ‘mParivahan’. The SOPs will be implemented to ensure compliance with the provisions of rule 139 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

Documents like the certificate of registration, insurance, fitness and permit, driving license, certificate for pollution under check and any other relevant documents, etc can be presented in the electronic format. The documents can be downloaded through the app and stored on the mobile devices. The particulars can be revealed via the app through an internet connection.

The digital format will ease things for motorists who may no longer need to collect documents after paying the challan as the record will be automatically updated on the system. The process will ensure transparency between the traffic enforcement officers and citizens.
