      VW and Hyundai lead the list of insurance industrys top safety-pick awards

      Europe’s largest car maker Volkswagen and South-Korean auto giant Hyundai have topped the list of the ‘safest new vehicles’ released by insurance industry in US. The list is used by safety-conscious new car customers.

      The list of these safest new vehicles was released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in which it has recognized as many as 66 vehicles with its "top safety pick award" for the model year 2011. The brand Hyundai along with its affiliate Kia Motors bagged the 9 awards. Sharing the first spot with Hyundai, Volkswagen and its Audi brand received 9 awards in total.

      The second spot was shared by General Motors, Ford and Toyota with 8 awards each. While Subaru and Chrysler got five awards apiece, Volvo and Mercedes received four awards each. Nissan and Honda managed to get 2 awards each, followed by Mitsubishi and BMW had only one award apiece.

      The vehicles that were selected for the award from Hyundai camp include premium sedan Genesis, mid-size sedan Sonata, sport utility vehicles such as Santa Fe and Tucson; along with Kia’s small new cars Forte and Soul, sedan Optima and SUV’s Sorento and Sportage.

      The vehicles selected from the Volkwagen camp include small cars Golf and GTI, sedans Jetta and Jetta SportWagen and SUVs Touareg and Tiguan; along with Audi’s sedans A3 and A4, and SUV Q5.
