The Indian unit of largest European car maker Volkswagen on Friday reported that it has registered a massive surge of 166 percent in its sales during the month of June. The company sold a total of 5,397 units of its cars during the month as compared to 2,032 units sold in the same month last year.

The compact hatchback Polo and sedan Vento contributed more than 90 percent in the company’s total sales at 5,136 units, during the month. The Polo model was launched in the Indian market in April 2010 and it has been performing considerably well since its launch. The car is competing with the likes of Ford Figo, Nissan Micra, Maruti Swift, and recently launched Toyota Etios Liva. The sales of company's premium Volkswagen Passat sedan stood at 197 units in the month.

While speaking on the company’s performance during the month, Volkswagen Group Sales India Member of Board and Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Neeraj Garg said, "Despite the current slowdown in the market due to recent hikes in both fuel prices and lending rates, we have fared pretty well in the current month, thanks to the strong product line up that we have in the market".
