Tata Motors is examining to sell its small car in Taiwanese market. Theodore Huang, Chairman, Teco Group of Taiwan has shown interest in introducing the car in Taiwan market as he anticipated that the car imported from India will still be cheaper than the cheapest car already available in Taiwan. “It is such an economical and good car,” said Huang, who immediately placed an order for two Nanos and waited six months to have them imported to Taiwan. Huang said Teco is studying the feasibility of bringing the Tata Nano to Taiwan — either through a traditional dealership model or via local production.

Currently, Chinese car Panda retails in Taiwan at NT$400,000 but if Nano is imported in Taiwan, it will fall in the price range of NT$150,000 (US$5,000) and NT$200,000, taking into account all the extra costs, such as commodity taxes.

Emission norms and fuel efficiency norms are stricter in Taiwan and the car will be tweaked to meet those norms before it is exported from India. “We are very interested in working with Tata Motors. It could mean [Teco] would manufacture some auto parts, re-engineer the car in Taiwan or serve as the dealer selling the Nano here,” he said. “This is a vehicle that Taiwanese automakers can mirror the success of.”
