Mahindra and Mahindra is ready to introduce their new jeep-look-alike SUV model Mahindra Thar in India this month. Thar is a refined version of Commander Jeep and is being re-introduced by nearly after 10 years in the Indian market. With a price tag of Rs 7 lakhs, Mahindra plans to introduce this first in Kerala and Rajasthan in this December. The SUV is already on the run now in South African roads at the price range of Rs 9.5-10 lakhs. M&M intends to refine this SUV to suit the Indian demands, said an official from the company.

Mahindra had showcased the Thar concept at Bologna Motor Show. The Thar is powered by a 4 cylinder, 2500 cc turbo-diesel direct injection common rail engine producing 107Kw of power. Mahindra has used its new generation independent torsion-bar front suspension system from the Scorpio for the Thar. At the rear it has the leaf-spring suspension setup from the Bolero. The engine is mated to a full-synchromesh 5-speed gearbox and a manual shift Borg-Warner 4×4 transfer case, with a 2.48:1 low-ratio for pure off road use. It sports open differentials at front and rear (with the front differential chassis mounted). It is expected to be priced at Rs 6-8 lakhs.
