Riding a two-wheeler without a helmet is not just dangerous but also illegal. Most auto dealers in the country do not provide with original ISI helmets even though a mandatory directive from Supreme Court clearly states that two-wheelers can only be registered at the RTO if the manufacturer or dealers provide with ISI helmets that are certified by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

To ensure that the policy is being strictly adhered to, the RTO has directed dealers to submit a headgear supply declaration along with the papers while registering the two-wheelers. Speaking more on the occasion, B M Prajapati, regional transport officer said, “There are clear directions to the auto dealers to provide free helmets to those buying new vehicles at the time of purchase. The cost of helmet has to be mentioned in the sale invoice of the vehicle. But, none of the dealers in the city are following the law. No new vehicles in the city would be registered if the dealers fail to provide helmet to the buyer and mention the same in the invoice.”

Beginning November 6th, i.e tomorrow the RTO shall begin a 14-day long drive that shall penalize offenders riding without a helmet. As for people who have bough vehicles recently and have not received free ISI helmets can contact the transport office for further action against the dealers. Adding further on this subject, Prajapati said, “We have invited applications from the vehicle owners who haven't got the helmets. All the dealers will be asked to provide helmet to their customers immediately.”
