Italian automaker, Fiat is working on the next generation models of the Punto hatchback and Linea sedan. If media reports are to be believed, the next generation siblings will make their global debuts in 2016-17. The production of both models will start at Fiat’s Turkey unit in 2016. Fiat India will launch the next-generation Linea and Punto hatchback by the end of 2017. The company recently introduced the facelifted Linea and Punto in India, which will continue to sell for next 2-3 years until their replacement models launch in the market.

In India, Fiat Linea and Punto are produced, with high level of localization, at the Tata-Fiat joint manufacturing unit at Ranjangaon, Pune. Reports suggest that the next-generation models would be based on the new 326 platform; however, AutoNews claims that the upcoming Punto and Linea will use the US Wide platform, which will also underpins the 500L hatchback. Moreover, few reports suggest that the five-door version of 500 would act as the next-gen Punto.

The next generation Fiat Linea and Punto are expected to feature turbocharged units, which will suit the current strong emission norms standards around the globe. Moreover, the increase in demand for better fuel efficient vehicles could also play an important role in selecting powetrains. Like the current models, the next generation models are expected to offer excellent ride quality.

Fiat is also contemplating a compact SUV for the Indian car market, codenamed as the X3U. The compact SUV will be based on the 326 platform and is likely to go on sale in India in 2016. It will compete against the likes of Ford EcoSport, Maruti Suzuki XA Alpha and other upcoming sub-4 metre SUVs.
