The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class L has hit the showrooms in China. It’s the long wheelbase version made locally by the Beijing-Benz joint venture. Prices for this more spacious version of the regular E-Class range between 436.800 yuan (Rs 43.93 lakh) and 498.800 yuan (Rs 50.15 lakh).
Mercedes has announced that it will sell the E-Class L in two variants: the standard variant and a Sport, with the latter featuring sportier exterior bits. While the outgoing E-Class L is merely a stretched version of the standard offering, this new model is quite different. Post the B-pillar, it’s fairly new and adds 14cm to the wheelbase. Design wise, Mercedes has integrated an all-new rear quarter glass and made a new rear door.
Under the hood, the E200L variant will get a 184bhp, 2.0 turbo whereas the E300L will come with a 245bhp 2.0 turbo mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox.
China is one of the largest markets for long wheelbase vehicles, which is why pretty much every luxury manufacturer is willing to sell long-wheelbase models based on their existing cars. The new E-Class L will compete with the Audi A6L and the BMW 5Li.
