The recently launched Tiago hatchback from Tata Motors has been a considerable contributor to overall sales numbers of the company. To thrill the younger lot further, the company will be introducing a powerful Tiago variant likely to be called Tiago Plus/Sport in the country in the last quarter this year. The Indian automaker will be introducing the new variant directly in dealerships in the coming months and except for mechanical tweaks, it will not get major cosmetic upgrades.
Under the hood, the existing 1.2-litre three cylinder Revotron petrol engine generates 84bhp of power at 6,000rpm and 114Nm of torque at 3,500rpm. This engine will be tweaked to generate an additional 30-35 per cent power thereby likely to generate about 105-110bhp of power and is likely to continue being offered in manual transmission. Given the current price range at which the Tiago is offered, the new powerful variant might as well emerge as the lowest priced performance hatchback in the country and compete strongly against the upcoming Baleno RS from Maruti Suzuki and Polo GT TSI.
The current model is offered in XB, XE, XM, XT and XZ variants. It is likely that the upcoming performance variant will only be offered in the top-spec variant. It might be offered with Harman music system with Bluetooth, i-Pod connectivity, AUX and USB input. For safety, it might get ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and front airbags as standard. More details about the vehicle will be known in the coming days.
