      Maruti Suzuki may offer hybrids at a lucrative price tag

      It has been a well known fact that owing to global warming issues and rising fuel costs, Hybrid technogy is the need of the hour. Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest carmaker is reportedly working on developing a low-cost hybrid technology. Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki shall utilize the technology on cars right from its introductory segment Alto to premium Swift hatchback. The development would made in a phased manner in about next three to four years.

      Sources from the company stated, “It is no more a concept. The real work is under way and the hybrid technology development is at an advanced stage. A large part of the development is happening in Japan and key inputs from Indian R&D engineers are also being absorbed. The idea is to offer a technology to the mass with not a major price difference over existing petrol cars." the cars loaded with this new technology shall be about 20-30% more efficiency.

      RC Bhargava, Maruti Suzuki chairman said to sources recently that the country's largest carmaker has already started working on hybrid technology for its future generation cars. Speaking more on the developments Bhargava said, “We need a hybrid system suitable for small cars which is low cost. The systems available today are expensive. I do think the development of low-cost hybrid is necessary, quite like the AMT we came out with.”

      The hybrid technology utilizes non-conventional propulsion system. Apart from a regular engine such cars also feature an electric motor. The mechanism stores braking energy to recharge the battery that shall drive the vehicle. Owing to new innovative technology the cost for such cars are expensive and Maruti Suzuki wants to offer such vehicle with an affordable price tag.
