Bajaj Auto, the leading two and three-wheeler maker in the Indian market, is mulling over the option of returning to the scooter manufacturing. Speaking to the reporters on Thursday, Group’s chairman Rahul Baja indicated that the coming months could well mark a big-bang return of the company to the scooter segment in the country. "Makes sense to manufacture scooters which can get us a market share of 20% and a reasonably good EBITA,” makes sense.

However, while adding that he no longer takes the decisions and his son Rajiv Bajaj (managing director of Bajaj Auto) would address the matter, Mr. Bajaj said, "My belief is that Bajaj Auto will manufacture gearless scooters in the next two-three years, sell 20,000 vehicles a month and earn an EBITA of 15-20 % on an annualized basis."

Bajaj Scooters, the most admired scooter brand in the county, almost disappeared from the market in the 1990s following the launch of a range of highly economical and stylish bikes in the country. It has been three years since the company has stopped manufacturing its iconic Chetak scooter. The last scooter that was produced by the Bajaj Auto was Crystal, launched about two years back.
