As per the recent information from Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), its members will start disclosing fuel efficiency of their various models as compared to its competitors from October this year. SIAM has announced a scheme of disclosure of fuel efficiency labelling for various models which will enable consumer to compare fuel efficiency of similar models in the same category.

Auto manufacturers in India have already started disclosing mileage of their own vehicles since last year which the government intends to make compulsory in the country. The government had said a mandatory fuel efficiency standard for auto makers will be introduced under the Energy Conservation Act by the Power Ministry. “We have solved the issue and the standards will be notified. There is still some fine-tuning to be done,” he said. While October 1 will see a regime of voluntary labelling, 2011 would ‘ideally' kick off with mandatory fuel efficiency standards.

"This will allow consumers to make the right choice of vehicles depending on their individual needs...It would encourage and promote lower fuel consumption," said Pawan Goenka, SIAM President.
