For further gaining a strong foothold in the Indian market, Fiat is hugely depending upon Chrysler. Three years ago, the Italian car maker Fiat had purchased majority of shares of the US auto manufacturer Chrysler. The company plans to launch its Alfa Romeo and Maserati, along with other premium brands.

Recently, officials from Chrysler came to India for carrying out product clinics for one of its sports utility vehicle (SUV), Jeep Grand Cherokee. This jeep’s price is more or less similar to Ssangyong Rexton, Chevrolet Captiva and Toyota Fortuner.

According to an insider, the company is strategically devising plans to expand its reach in the country, mainly by launching new models. If Fiat’s plans are successful, the new launches will not be a part of the Fiat and Tata Motors joint venture rather it will be car maker’s individual project. Fiat and Tata Motors formed an alliance to make cars for the two companies along with engines as well as transmissions.

Chrysler’s Jeep Grand Cherokee will be introduced in the Indian market in a completely-knocked-down (CKD) form. The vehicle will be assembled at the Tata-Fiat manufacturing operations unit situated in Ranjangaon, near Pune. Moreover, the CBU (completely built unit) route will be used by the Italian automaker to bring its brand into India.

Though almost all international car makers have increased their operations in India by introducing vehicles across segments, ranging from compact to luxury cars; Fiat was lagging behind. However, with the launch of this trendy Jeep in the SUV segment, the company will definitely add a feather to its portfolio.

Ariel Gavilan, spokesperson for Chrysler, said, “There are no new plans to be announced at this time.” Contrary to this, individuals close to Fiat believe that Chrysler has plans to foray into the emerging markets and the lucrative Indian automobile market is one of its focal points.
