Lamborghini, Ferrari, Ducati and Maserati shut down their automotive plants after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Northern Italy near Bologna around 9 am local time. Apart from causing heavy damage to property, the earthquake left 16 people dead and 350 injured.
Soon after this earthquake, which hit the Emilia Romagna region, the automobile companies stopped their operations and sent their staff home, so that they can take care of their property and check the wellbeing of their families. Ducati headquarters in Borgo Panigale, Ferrari headquarters in Maranello Italy and Lamborghini base in Sant'Agata remained unaffected by the earthquake and no major loss has been reported.
Even Maserati sent their workers home after the earthquake to take care of their families. As per reports, the automobile company faced some losses in the earthquake. No detail report is yet available about the exact damage caused to the plant or whether it will be able to continue the production of luxury cars immediately after the devastating earthquake. The company has also not released any information whether the plant needs some repair works to get back into operation,
Around14,000 people became homeless in and near Emilia Romagna region north due to this earthquake. People across northern and central Italy felt the impact of the earthquake even though the epicentre was located about 25 miles northwest of Bologna. Throughout the day, there were dozens of after shocks out of which some were as high as 5.0 on the Richter scale. Apart from slowing the pace of rescue operation, these after shocks multiplied the damage.
Cellular service was disrupted in the region making it difficult for those buried under the debris of buildings to call for help. In last 9 days, this was the second major earthquake. Earlier, on May 20th, a smaller quake struck Italy killing 7 people and leaving 7,000 homeless.
