Both Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai i10 have been game changers for their respective auto makers. Both the hatchbacks have made huge sales and captured a good percentage of market shares for their companies. A lot of revisions have been made to them over the years and today we see how they fare against each other. Grand i10 from Hyundai will be put up against the Swift to determine which one of them rules the street. The diesel variants of both the cars will be used for comparison.

Looking at the sales figures, Maruti Swift emerges as the top choice for hatchbacks in India; the second spot is held by Hyundai. Going by the specification on paper, the Swift clearly takes a jump-start lead with 1248 cc engine producing 74 bhp of maximum power compared to the 1120 cc engine of Grand i10 delivering just 70 bhp. Just when things are getting bad for the Grand i10, a comparison on the interiors makes up for the shortcomings in the engine. The interiors of the Hyundai Grand i10 are nicely finished with no rough edges compared the interiors of the Swift. The interiors of Hyundai’s car are spacious compared to that of the Swift that still has refused to change what it was a decade ago when launched. The Grand i10 has the bigger boot and the access to it is also pretty simple.

The exterior design is where Swift fares better than the Grand i10. When compared with Maruti Suzuki Swift, the Hyundai Grand i10 looks more oriental. A lot of this can be attributed to the ‘Fluidic’ design by Hyundai which does not appeal well in small cars. When it comes to riding quality, Swift takes an impressive lead by absorbing all the bumps and potholes thrown at it by the Indian roads. Suspension noise is minimal, and it has a quieter cabin than the Grand i10. The Grand i10 doesn’t perform that great when it comes to riding and handling, with a light steering and stiffer suspensions. The steering and suspension do not encourage you to press the accelerator harder.

While both of them do a superb job in the hatchback segment, picking one will be hard and tricky. If ride quality and performance is what matters to you, then we’d suggest you to take the Swift. However, for feature, space and practicality the Grand i10 is your car. Also, the Grand i10 stands lower than the Swift in the price ladder.
