For the first time, a decently powerful premium hatchback, in the form of the new Volkswagen Polo 1.2 GT TSI has been launched in India. With a 1.2 litre petrol TSI engine, this car generates a tremendous power output of 104 bhp with a torque of 175 Nm, which propels it from 0-100 kmph in just 9.8 seconds. Power delivery is instantaneous in the new Polo, which makes it pleasurable to drive. The engine is mated to a 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) with dual clutch, which allows this car to easily overtake heavy traffic in cities. From the outside, this vehicle has been given a new rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tip, front, side and rear skirts and 15 inch alloy wheels. Traction Control has been provided for better grip during high speeds. In addition, the car delivers an ARAI certified mileage of 17.2 kmpl.
In comparison to Polo 1.2 GT TSI, all versions of the Hyundai i20 premium petrol hatchback run on 14 inch alloy wheels. The i20 has a conspicuous front nose, wide headlights and big fog lamps that really make it stand out amongst the crowd. Under its hood, the vehicle is powered by a 1.2 litre Kappa petrol engine that generates 84 bhp of power and 116 Nm of peak torque. No Traction Control is available in this vehicle. However, the vehicle also comes with a 1.4 litre Gamma petrol engine that generates a higher power output of 99 bhp. Interestingly, the Gamma engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. In terms of overall fit and finish, both vehicles seem to be on the same pedestal. At the same time, being a premium hatchback, the i20 has a generous amount of interior space and largest boot in its segment (295 litres). ABS along with EBD has also been provided in this vehicle. This vehicle certainly accelerates slower than the new Volkswagen Polo 1.2 GT TSI, with 0-100 kmph coming up in 15.21 seconds. A mileage of 15 kmpl can be expected from this car.
So the verdict is clear. If a buyer is looking for a premium hatchback with a lot of space and classy interiors, the Hyundai i20 definitely has an edge. But with performance hatchbacks becoming popular, with one looking to enjoy driving at all times, the Polo 1.2 GT TSI is the perfect choice. The Polo also delivers a better mileage and has a 7-speed DSG transmission, as compared to the 4-speed auto gearbox in the i20.
