Across the globe false insurance claims is not new to authorities. A crime like this is indeed caught much sooner than expected. 32 year old Purushottaman, a local functionary of the Vidudalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) was jobless and used to just organise proceedings in the local Kangaroo courts. In an attempt to make quick buck, Purushottaman lodged a complaint stating that his new Honda Unicorn was stolen. Post a long search for the bike, the police department issued a non-traceable certificate, which then enabled his to claim the insured sum.

All this while, the bike had been hidden in a godown under his friend’s vigil. Since the bike was taken on loan, he reportedly payed the first EMI of about Rs. 8,000 whereas later on, he defaulted on the payments claiming that he has lost the bike, post which the company confiscated his RC book. During a routine check the police, he could not produce the bike paper’s to which he claimed that it is at home. The police doubting foul play got his bike confiscated and asked him to produce papers. As the police checked into their records they realised about this stolen complaint.

Speaking more on the occasion, an investigating officer said, “After taking the non-traceable certificate from police, he submitted it to the insurance firm in Royapuram. The firm which believed that the claim was genuine paid him 65,000.” Post receiving the insured amount, he started using the bike with a fake number plate.
