New cars in the Indian market will soon be carrying a government certified fuel efficiency rating label pasted on their body, as government has reached in the final stage of the implementation of this new labeling. The fuel efficiency labeling will offer the buyers a better comparison of their preferred cars on the basis of their respective fuel consumption.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has almost finalized the rules of this new fuel efficiency labeling. Initially, the labeling will be voluntary and the government plans to make it mandatory by the starting of next financial year.

With the implementation of new fuel efficiency labeling, no new car will be rolled-out on the road without its efficiency labeled on it. Moreover, the Indian auto industry has to meet the improved fuel efficiency targets by year 2015-16. While the small cars in the country are already highly fuel efficient, the mid size cars and utility vehicles will have to come with big improvements in their fuel efficiency, by that time.

It took almost two years to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency to won the battle against auto biggies and road transport and highways ministry.
