The Indian auto industry is expressing strong reservations on the recently proposed fuel efficiency standards for passenger cars in India. The proposed five star rating system, CO2 emission targets and the timing of the introduction of new norms are among the major reservation of the industry players.

The government has formed a technical committee to formulate a final draft of fuel efficiency standards for passenger cars under the Energy Conservation Act. The committee includes officials of road transport ministry and power ministry and experts of the auto industry.

According to recent industry reports, the industry wants the year of introduction of these new norms to shift to 2017 from proposed time of year 2015. However, the government has completely rejected the proposal of shifting the timing of the introduction.

"There would not be any further meetings. There is no agreement. While a section of the industry has agreed to some parts of the proposal, the others are not coming around at all. We will frame the guidelines and put them in the public domain at one meeting called with all stakeholders," a senior road transport ministry official said in a statement.
