BMW has revealed in its 2016 third quarter financial results, their intention to launch an all-electric BMW X3 before the year 2020.

BMW plans to introduce all-electric X3 by 2020

BMW has been upgrading their EV technology over the years, and the same can be seen with their i3, i8, and their plug-in versions like the X5 xDrive40e, 225xe, 330e, and 740e. Once introduced, BMW’s X3 EV will join the brand’s i3 as a model that dumps the combustion engine for an all-electric powerplant. At the moment there are no details about what’s exactly under the electric X3’s hood, but BMW boss Harald Kruger said, "Our consistent achievement of high profitability enables us to finance future investments from our own resources."

It is likely that the BMW X3 EV will be based on BMW’s upcoming new X3 model which is slated to debut in the international market in the second half of 2017, and should be based on the lighter, rear-wheel drive platform which underpins the new 5 Series. The next X3 is also likely to get a hybrid variant that could use the BMW 330e’s 2.0-litre petrol engine along with an electric motor.

We will give you the details on this in the months to come.
