Luxury auto maker held a grand event on June 5th, 2014 in Munich to hand over initial eight units of i8 sports car to eight customers. By commencing delivery of initial variants of new i8 sports car prior to the speculated time the auto maker has become a pioneer among auto makers across the globe to offer a production vehicle with laser equipped head lamps. The company had exhibited the unique technology in the beginning of 2014, buzz had it that BMW will roll out i8 during August, but in a bid to offer the latest technology to its customers before any other auto major, BMW hastened the launch of i8 sports car much ahead of its expected launch date. BMW’s arch rival Audi will also come with R8LMX, equipped with laser lights. Audi R8LMXis likely to be launched in global markets by summer this year. The German luxury auto maker did show glimpse of the sports vehicle at the 12thedition of Delhi Motor Show in February this year, however BMW has not proclaimed anything yet on the launch of i8 in India and it is being believed that probability of i8 launch in India is low.
The curiosity around laser-boost technology is because of its nature to enhance range of the throw much more than the standard LED lamps. Experts suggest that laser-boost technology enables the vehicle to throw light 600 meters more than the standard LED head lamps. Besides, these are lighter, occupy less space inside the head lamp casing and consume 30 per cent less energy than the power-savingLEDs.
A camera aided adaptive system sense supports the lights which recognizes the traffic coming in and hence changes the range and direction of the light to abstain dazzling. The system has been developed in such a way that it responds to the steering movements and administers the light to a great extent in the direction one is travelling.
