We attended the launch of the new generation Safari variant, the Storme, by Tata Motors at the 11th edition of the largest auto show in Asia, the Delhi Auto Expo 2012 on 5th January. The Safari is one of the most popular models by Tata Motors. Over the years Tata Safari has undergone many changes and the latest version Storme is also a better and enhanced model of the Safari.
P M Telang, Managing Director, India Operations, Tata Motors, at the occasion said, "With the Safari Storme, the iconic Safari becomes a contemporary SUV suited to the desires of today's SUV lovers.”
The Safari Storme has a refreshed new look and promises of an efficient engine as well. It has been incorporated with innovative technologies and brand new interiors and exteriors. The highlighting exterior features include new projector headlamps, a trendy new grille along with a ‘power bulge’ on the bonnet. The front of the car is exquisitely designed and the rear is sporty. The rear has aerodynamic spoilers, tailgate with an all new guise, fresh chrome-tipped twin exhausts and a spare tyre tucked underneath. The adventurous and athletic look of the car has been further enhanced through the newly designed roof-rails and erogonomical side footsteps.
New interiors are plush and luxurious with soft beige seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, wood-accented dashboard and door trims and chrome highlighted gear knob. The car also comes with a brand new instrument cluster, chrome-lined speaker grills and door trims. Its comfort features comprise Dual AC with separate integrated roof-mounted, electrically operated ORVMs and front seats with fore and aft adjustment and lumbar support.
To ensure utmost safety of passengers, the Tata Safari Storme is assimilated with various important security features. It includes 4-channel ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), collapsible steering wheel column, auto engine immobiliser, dual SRS airbags and disc brakes on all wheels. Crumple zones, side intrusion beams on all doors, rigid ladder frame construction with hydro-formed long members, reverse parking system and new rack-and-pinion steering system are a few more.
The Tata Safari Storme comes fitted with a 2.2-litre, 16-valve common rail, DiCOR engine. It generates a maximum power output of 138 hp and torque of 320 Nm. The engine is equipped with a variable geometry turbo and the car has a 5-speed manual transmission. The car can easily be shifted from 2WD to 4WD while driving due to the assimilation of Electronic Shift-on-the-Fly (ESOF). It has a turning circle radius of 5.4 metres and a ground clearance of 200 mm.
The Safari Storme will give competition to models such as Mahindra’s XUV 500, Scorpio, Ford EcoSport, Force One.
