Teams have lined up in Geneva to traverse the course of 30000 km through 16 countries in 80 days. The Zero Emission Race is being hosted by the UN’s European headquarters and has different participants from across the globe that will cover the distance with vehicles powered with renewable energies. The UN intends to send across the message “A race for the future, and the future is green and innovative!” with this event. Five Teams from four continents are taking up the challenge. On 16 August they started with their electric vehicles on the longest and greenest race of all time: the ZERO Race.

According to the official statement from the Zero Race event, “This is not a race about speed. This is a race to make the planet greener and a better place to live for future generations. This is a race to make small, efficient vehicles popular. The team with the smartest, most efficient, most reliable, most usable and most popular concept will be the winner.”

The race is also about creating awareness about Biodiversity Protection. Each car in the event has been named on the basis of endangered species that face a threat due to climatic changes. The UN has already declared 2010 as the international Year of Biodiversity.
