Swedish brand Volvo has been a strong name in the global automotive platform. Safety and quality has been of primary importance for the Volvo brand across the globe. A while ago Volvo had undertaken responsibility to make its cars safer by 2020. By safe cars, the company meant developing cars that do not kill passengers or seriously injure pedestrians in case os an accident. Reportedly, the company has moved a step closer to achieving this dream.
The Volvo's four year long project named as “Non-Hit Car and Truck project” is slated to end this December. In terms of achievement, the biggest development from the company in this regard would be the next-generation sensor fusion technologies that provide a seamless 360 degree view around the car.
Speaking more about the project, Anders Almevad, Project Manager for the Non-Hit Car Project at Volvo Cars, said, “Volvo Cars is definitely on the front line when it comes to innovative active safety research and development. The technology is also imperative for the development of self-driving cars, which will be able to automatically steer and brake to avoid collision with any object in any situation. Our primary objective is to focus on preventing different types of accident scenarios.”
One of the major challenges encountered by Volvo during the project was to build a single cohesive sensor detection system that would share information from various technologies like cameras, radar, GPS, and so on. To serve the purpose, the vehicles have been mated with Sensor Fusion framework covers 360 degree view of the environment for interception and detecting any potentially threatening object that the driver of the vehicle may have missed. The manoeuvre generator programmed by a software identifies collision free escape routes using 360 Degree coverage.
