      Volkswagen Sources Auto components from India

      The German auto maker, Volkswagen AG, is planning to source auto components from India. It is planning to order auto components from India worth 1 billion Euros for its global operations. It also aims to localise its cars in India to the extent of nearly 70 percent. It is has its manufacturing unit in Pune in India next year and it plans to start its operations of localising the cars this manufacturing facility.

      "Our target is to give priority to local suppliers for our soon-to-be-launched Polo once the Pune plant starts operations by the end of 2009, Volkswagen AG global head of purchase (new product start-ups) Bernd Martin said. "We are planning to source at least 55% of the components for the plant and its production at the start of our operations and take the figure to 70% within two years of that," he added.

      The company aims to source auto components worth 70 billion Euros from its global suppliers and components worth atleast 1 billion Euros from the Indian suppliers. "We are looking at exporting components worth at least 1 billion euros from the Indian supplier firm within next two-three years," Martin said.
