Codenamed EA211, the 1.5-litre unit is set to arrive in late 2016 with initial outputs of 128bhp and 148bhp. One of the many highlights of the new power unit is the turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, which features in a volume-produced spark ignition engine for the first time.

In order to achieve future emission legislations, the EA211 TSI unit has been made using a new kind of combustion process. The result is a maximum torque that is available early (from 1,300 rpm) and over a broader rev range. VW is also claiming efficiency benefits of up to 10 per cent compared with the previous 1.4 TSI unit. Besides newer combustion process, the engine benefits from an improved direct injection technology, heat management and a higher compression ratio.

The new 1.5-litre TSI engine is likely to arrive with the facelifted version of the Golf that’s due for launch later this year. Expect to see this engine in India in the future cars from the VW Group.
