The Volkswagen Polo R Cup 2014 has started; selection of drivers was done within two days. Hundreds of drivers from every nook and corner of the countryinquiredto be among the shortlisted participants for the final round. Only twenty three drivers were selected for final drivers’ selection round which was held at Kari Motor Speedway Coimbatore on March 5thand March 6th.
On March 5th, all the drivers were briefed regarding the race cars for the changes made to the car for delivering high performance and necessary safety instructions were also given. After giving instructions, drivers were then judged for braking and slalom exercises for evaluating their control on car and responsiveness. Next were driving sessions around the full circuit under the guidance of Polo R Cup driver coach and winner of various NationalKartingChampionships,RayomandBanajee. After these sessions were completed, drivers were then sent for two timed sessions. On the completion of first day, 16 drivers were selected who further fought next day to be among the finalists.
On day 2, 16 drivers selected from previous day and were judged for various aspects through several driving sessions. Selection for final twelve was done based on the willingness and readiness of the drivers to implement and absorb instructions given by the coaches.
Parameters on which participants were evaluated included all braking techniques, acceleration, racing lines, aggression and fitness abilities. In the final round lap times were also considered, along with these, drivers also had to go through fitness tests like muscle-strength exercises,cardioexercises and running.
