The 2012 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) that is held at the Cobo Centre in Detroit is one of the most popular auto shows in the world. Major brands like Ford, Lexus, Cadillac and Fiat are expected to be part of this event. As a matter of fact, the Cobo Centre is undergoing renovations costing $300 million, this time round.

The renovations are likely to be completed on time and will include a 25,000 square feet of more space in the Oakland Hall, along with loading dock bays, upgraded escalators and electrical revamp. The parking space is expected to increase, in addition to major interior changes.

Thom Connors, General Manager, Cobo Centre, said, “There’s every indication that this year’s show is bigger and better; and the displays, and what you are seeing here, are among the finest that are put together anywhere in the world for an industrial stage show.”

There will also be a walkway added to the Joe Louise arena that will be used by the Ford Motor Co.

The last time Cobo Centre went under renovation was way back in 1989 and over the years the centre started facing problems like leaking roof, faulty electrical systems and old interiors. As a result, it became mandatory for the centre to be upgraded for the upcoming shows.

The construction work has been going on for months now and increasing the loading docks has helped in reducing the energy by 15% to 20%. The centre has been awarded a certificate by the ‘Green Venues Michigan Program’ for being a ‘Green Venue’.

In the next two years around 150,000 square feet of more space will be added to the Cobo Centre, along with a waterfront atrium entrance which will be completed for the 2013 show. The Cobo arena will have a huge exhibition space and a ballroom. Connors added “We’ve come a long way in a short period of time. People who work here are passionate about making it better.”
