Shifting focus away from bigger vehicles, the government is also planning on enforcing stricter emission norms for motorcycles and scooters in the country as they account for majority of automotive sale in the country. As per a recent order, cars would mandatorily require to comply to BS-VI emission norms latest by 1st April, 2020. As per unconfirmed reports sources this regulation could be applicable for two-wheelers as well and an official update in this regard would be made in the coming days.

Going by numbers, in 2014-15 two-wheelers have accounted for total sales of about 1.6 crore. Given the massive sales numbers two-wheelers do have a considerable impact on the environment. As per the new BS-IV norms NOx emission limit for cars is set at 0.08 gram per kilometer while for two wheelers it is 0.39 gram per kilometer. The effective date norms for newly introduced model is on 1st April 2016, while existing models need to have it by 2017.
