Following the ban on registration of new 2-litre plus diesel vehicles in Delhi, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has now issued an immediate ban on diesel vehicles over 10 years old. The court has requested the government to de-register these vehicles and has also asked the Delhi RTO for the details of the affected vehicles.

The NGT has already prohibited the state government from registering new diesel vehicles with engine capacity of 2000cc and above, a move that has seriously affected both local and international manufacturers. This immediate ban, however, is likely to bring respite for some brands as a significant chunk of 10 year old-plus vehicles will be taken off the roads in the capital city only to be replaced by brand new cars. Sales of used cars could also see some upward momentum as some of the affected owners may not be financially ready to invest in brand new vehicles.

Besides directing the Delhi RTO to give the details of the affected vehicles, The NGT has also ordered to publish a public notice for the immediate ban. The court will issue an update on the current ban on July 20.
