A brand new Tata Nano caught fire in Mumbai on the Eastern Express Highway. The car was owned by Satish Sawant who had spent Rs. 2.4 lakh on the car and was being taken home by a Concord Motors driver as Sawant could not drive himself. Satish Sawant had taken the top end silver coloured model fitted with AC and power steering.
A bike rider following the car overtook the Nano and informed Sawant that there was fire behind the car. “I have no idea what happened. A motorcycle rider overtook me and told me that the vehicle was on fire. The engine was behind me and I did not realise that the car was on fire,” said Sawant. He quickly jumped out of the car and shortly the whole car was engulfed in flames.
Tata Nano safety features and quality had been under scrutiny earlier as well when three Tata Nanos had caught fire in September last year. The cars were idly parked in parking lots or housing society when the technical fault in the battery and ignition switch caught fire melting the plastic around the switch.
The car was taken by Tata engineers for inspection. We wait for the Company's comments.
