One of the country's leading passenger and commercial vehicles manufacturers, Tata Motors wishes to offer more value for money with the Nano. Many spy photographers have captured different versions of the Nano across the country, and more recently, Ratan Tata had also said that a revamp of the Tata Nano is in progress. For the new petrol version, a 800cc petrol engine is expected to be installed, while the capacity of the 3 cylinder diesel version is still not clear.
The 800cc petrol Nano is expected to be launched by the end of 2013, and so would be the diesel version. One can expect the petrol vehicle to be priced at about Rs. 2.5 lakhs. After the launch of this engine, the Nano would directly compete against market leaders Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon.
As per speculations, it was known that a 700cc diesel version of the Nano could generate outstanding fuel efficiency figures of 40 kmpl. Based on this, Tata Motors expects many buyers to choose this vehicle over two wheelers. Once available, it will be the only vehicle of around 800cc with a diesel motor. It is also expected that the 624cc engine version would continue to be sold, but that may shift to smaller cities, as per ET.
The Tata Nano was first launched in 2009, and though the company achieved phenomenal success with the vehicle in the initial phase, sales soon fizzled out. Part of the reason for this decline was also the case of Tata Nano catching fire in different parts of the country. But in November 2012, sales touched an all-time low of 3,500 units.
