Homegrown auto giant Tata Motors has missed the previously set target of delivering its small car Nano to the first one lakh customers, by the end of year 2010. The company had chosen about 1.55 lakh customers in year 2009, targeting to deliver first one lakh units of Nano by year 2010, in the first phase.

So far, the company has delivered about 77,000 units of Nano in the Indian market which includes the buyers of second phase and also the direct sales from showrooms. Tata Motors had started delivering the Nano in the country in July 2009.

The company had started open sales of Tata Nano in five South-Indian states after inaugurating new manufacturing plant in Sanand (Gujarat), in August 2010.

In last one year, a number of buyers have decided against taking immediate deliveries of Tata Nano. The company spokesman recently said in a statement given to media, "There could be several customers waiting for deliveries, but at their own choice. We had informed everyone that the car was ready."

Earlier this week, the company had announced that Nano will now be available for direct sales at all of its 874 dealerships spread across 28 states of India. Before this, the car was available in only 12 Indian states.
