Korean carmaker Hyundai has recently earned the title of being a largest car exporter in India. The carmaker has been quite popular across all segments in the country; especially the hatchback segment from the brand’s production line has been doing really well for the carmaker. Recently launched Grand i10 has been a popular pick in the country. Moreover, a left hand drive version for the international market has also been spotted undergoing road tests on a number of occasions. The recently launched Xcent sedan has also been a great success in the sub 4-meter sedan category.

As per a latest update the Korean carmaker intends on launching a fresh new premium hatchback sometime in early last quarter of this year, probably during festive season. It is anticipated that this premium hatchback is none other than internationally successful ‘i30’ hatchback. Internationally the vehicle is available in three options – five-door, three-door and an Estate. For the Indian market it shall probably be a five-door version.

Internationally the i30 hatchback is available in four engine variants namely - 1.6-litre MPi, 1.6-litre GDi, 1.8-litre MPi and a 1.6-litre VGT. The fairly powered engines are available in manual transmission that is mated to six speed gearbox, or an Automatic transmission. For now, it is unknown as to which variant may be sold here, but it is anticipated that it shall be launched in automatic as well as manual variant. Price shall also be known post an official announcement made by the company in this regard.

Speaking more on the possibility, Rakesh Srivastava, senior vice-president, marketing and sales, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, said to source, “The i20 is among the finest hatchbacks in the country, but we also believe that above the i20, there is room for a very premium hatchback. Therefore, we are planning to come up with a new car that will be slotted above the i20. By this year-end we may come up with a new, very premium hatchback.”
