Tata Motors is planning to bring a small 800cc car to India by 2012. Sources reveal that a car codenamed as Dolphin is on the anvil and is being developed under scrutiny of Tata engineers. The new car will compete with Maruti Alto and will be placed between Tata Nano and Indica. Tata Nano falls below Rs 2 lakh and price range for Indica starts at Rs. 2.8 lakh. There is hence a definite a gap in Tata Motors’ portfolio that can be filled with a suitable product and the company is already on its way to do the same.

Tata Motors is usually tight-lipped about its forth-coming plans and various sources close to developments of its plans usually hint at the latest developments within the company. There is no official statement from the company about any such 800cc new model coming up to Indian market apart from a statement from Carl Peter Forster, MD and CEO, Tata Motors, “There is some white space between the Nano and Indica and we could be looking at it.”
