      New Chevrolet Beat with SMARTECH engine coming soon

      The Indian unit of US based leading car maker General Motors is all set to roll-out its new SMARTECH engine in the Indian market soon. Carrying a total displacement of 1.2L, the new SMARTECH engine will be developed locally at company’s engine production plant.

      Chevrolet Beat will be GM India’s first portfolio models to come powered by its state-of-art SMARTECH engine. The launch of new SMARTECH engine variant will enable the Beat series of cars to compete more promptly with the likes of Maruti Ritz and Ford Figo.

      The new 1.2L SMARTECH engine has been developed by GM Technical Centre-India in Bangalore in cooperation with GM's new engine plant in Talegaon. According to a recent statement give by General Motors India President and MD, Karl Slym, the company will roll-out a diesel version of the Beat model in the Indian market by the end of this year.

      Moreover, the company’s Halol plant in Gurgaon is currently going under a capacity expansion. GM India plans to enhance the capacity of this plant to 1,00,000 units from current annual capacity of 85,000 units.

      According to Mr. Slym, “GM India has invested more than Rs 5,000 crores in India till now and is deeply committed to this market, to its customers and all its stakeholders.” In the calendar year 2010, the company witnessed a growth of 60 percent as compared to the overall industry growth of 30 percent.
