Mercedes Benz India, the popular luxury car maker, has regained the top slot in the Indian market after almost two years gap. The company had lost its top position in the country to BMW for a period of more than two years. But in January 2011, the company managed to sell a total of 640 units of its cars in the Indian market, about 140 units more than BMW. It registered a heavy sales growth of 58.81 per cent during the month over the same period previous year.

According to a recent statement given by Dr Dieter Zetsche, Mercedes-Benz Cars Head and Chairman, Board of Management of Daimler AG, on Friday, "Overall car sales went up over 30 per cent last year. I'm proud to say that our sales force in India performed even better (in 2010).”He was speaking at a function in Chennai.

While further exuding confidence on the future in the Indian market, Zetsche said "In the past five years, the economy here has grown by an average of eight per cent annually. And industrial production has more than doubled in the same period."
