The newly launched compact SUV Vitara Brezza has been performing well in the Indian market. The vehicle has helped the Indian automaker strengthen its position in the utility vehicle segment with a 26 per cent rise as against the 15 per cent witnessed before the Brezza launch. However, Maruti’s gain has turned into a loss for utility vehicle segment leader Mahindra and Mahindra who has dropped from over 41 per cent share to lesser that 35 per cent within just three months.

The data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers has also reported a marginal decline in Hyundai’s hold in the utility vehicle segment. It is believed that Maruti Vitara Brezza will continue to hold its current share as it has received over 50,000 unit bookings till the end of last month. Which probably means that approximately 8,000 units would be delivered every month for the next six months.

In the last few months, major automakers like Hyundai introduced Creta, Mahindra introduced three new products – the TUV300, KUV100 and the NuvoSport, while Maruti introduced the Vitara Brezza and Honda its compact SUV BR-V. The competition in the utility vehicle segment is expected to grow stronger with more models being introduced from Maruti Suzuki like the Ignis.

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis comes with a 1.3-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that generates 90bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission and claims to return a fuel efficiency figure of 24.3kmpl.
