Pictures of the supposed new Suzuki Wagon R for the Japanese market have surfaced. The car has been almost the same in Japan since 2003. In case of India as well, in its essence, the Wagon R has been almost the same since its launch in the late 90s with periodic tweaks. Thus, there is a good chance of the new Wagon R making it to India as well.
The new Wagon R design is not radically different. It continues with the tall-boy design and the body shell is similar to its predecessor. The front fascia, though, is all new and gets a large front grille with chrome highlights and vertically stacked large headlamps. The air dam is sleek and the combination does make the Wagon R look bigger from the front. The similarity in the body shell is apparent from the side but the door now get a subtle cladding-like look for a beefy look. The tailgate gets a kink midway with a roof spoiler at the top.
The Japanese Wagon R will be a Kei car with the puny 600-odd cubic capacity turbocharged petrol engine mated to a manual gearbox. The India-spec car will get the standard 1.0-litre K10 petrol engine and the trusted five-speed manual gearbox with the front wheel drive setup. The Wagon R was last updated in India in 2013 and the hatchback is due for a facelift soon which means the new car might make it to India by next year.
