With Indian auto industry growing by leaps and bounds, Indian ministry trying is hard to keep up with the growing pace. It is ensuring to keep tabs on environment factors and better driveability which includes having better engines and better fuel efficiency for its passenger and commercial vehicles.

India is tweaking its fuel efficiency norms so that these are measured across different cars made by a company rather than a particular vehicle. Internationally, these parameters are referred to as corporate average fuel efficiency standards. Indian ministers from Transport Ministry and the Power Ministry’s Bureau Of Energy Efficiency are working on bringing new energy efficiency rules in line with norms prevalent in the US and most of the European nations.

Thus if new laws are implemented then Maruti model will state fuel efficiency for its entire fleet of vehicles from Alto to Grand Vitara rather than its individual models. “If Maruti’s Grand Vitara consumes a lot of fuel and distorts its average fuel consumption rate, then the company has the option to either improve the fuel efficiency of that particular model or reduce its sales. This way it would be able to adhere to the fuel efficiency norms and maintain its fleet balance,” said a person associated with drawing up the new norms.
