Hyundai Motor Co., the largest South Korean car maker, has recalled more than 1,90,000 units of its cars in the United States due to faulty airbags, as reported by a local news agency on Saturday. The recall includes 190,000 Elantra passenger cars that were sold in the period of year 2006 to year 2008, as these cars host a faulty air bag. However, the Elantra models sold in the Indian market are not affected from this fault.

The company will start the process of this huge vehicle recall from the first week of next month. The repairs to the affected vehicles will be provided at the Hyundai service centers in the US.

The Hyundai Elantra model has a weight sensor in the front passenger seats which deactivates the right frontal airbag whenever occupants of certain weights occupy the seat. It raises chances of the electrical connector for the weight sensor getting contaminated in certain circumstances, which can lead to a deployment of the airbag without considering the occupant’s weight.

The company has assured that its dealers at the service centers will inspect the affected vehicles for the above mentioned defect and will install a protective cover over the electrical connector of the weight sensor to prevent contamination.
