The Indian unit of Korean auto giant Hyundai is mulling over setting up a new manufacturing plant in the state of Gujarat. The company officials have visited the Dholera region near Ahmedabad, a site suggested to the company by state government officials.

The Dholera falls under the special investment region (SIR) in the state and is spread over an area of 80,000 hectares. The site is located near to Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and is just 90 km away from Ahmedabad city where a new international airport will be established within next few years.

Meanwhile, the company has announced to set-up a new diesel engine manufacturing plant in the Indian market with an investment of Rs 400 crore. The new engine production plant will go on stream by the end of year 2013. At present, the company imports the diesel engines from Korea for its cars including hatchback Hyundai i20 and sedan Hyundai Verna Transform.

Since the relocation of Tata Nano plant from Singur in Kolkata to Sanand near Ahmedabad, the state of Gujarat has been gradually emerging as a favorable destination for the car makers to establish their manufacturing facilities. Recently, Ford India was in talks with Gujarat officials to establish a new manufacturing plant in the state.
