Indian bike-maker Bajaj has been a strong player in the two wheeler market in the country. On the other hand, Japanese bike-maker Honda has been a key player in the scooter segment who has been fastly moving ahead in the bike sales in the country too. Bajaj has been a popular choice in the motorcycle segment, whereas the company took a silent exit from the scooter segment a while ago.

As per data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), last year Bajaj sold about 1,26,263 units more than that of Honda in the month of May. Whereas, this year the difference has come down considerably to a mere 23, 563 units in May. A majority of the sale number for Honda motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) comes from its scooter sales in India. But now, HMSI has intended to focus more on its motorcycle segment.

Speaking more on the occasions Y S Guleria, vice-president for sales and marketing, HMSI said, “Our representation was minimal in the 100-110 cc segment, which will be our focus area. That is one area where we will grow. Also, rural is one area where we are growing rapidly.” Whereas the still ruling champion in the turf representative, Rajiv Bajaj, managing director, Bajaj Auto said, “Our goal is to be a global motorcycle leader. Towards this purpose we continue to pursue motorcycles that represent greater technology and profitability for all global markets, rather than cheap 100cc ones largely for the Indian market. This year we believe India will be one of our markets where we will gain share, and towards this purpose we have a very significant launch in the commuter motorcycle segment this month.”
