Excited with the heavy sales growth in the Indian market, the Indian unit of the Japanese auto giant Honda is now looking forward to grab the second spot in the Indian two-wheeler market. Honda has recently overtaken TVS in the Indian market, replacing it from the third position in India. Interestingly, Honda is just 7000 units behind form the second largest two-wheeler maker Bajaj Auto Ltd.

In the month of February 2012, Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India (HMSI) managed to sell 1.97 lakh units of its vehicles in the Indian market, registering a sales surge of 11.2 percent over the previous month. In the same month, Bajaj Auto sold a total of 2.04 lakh units of its portfolio vehicles as compared to 2.02 lakh vehicles in January 2012.

However, if we take the first 11 months of this financial year, Bajaj Auto is well ahead of Honda by about 5.73 lakh units. To take on Bajaj Auto with both hands, the company is now planning to launch new bikes in the entry level segment.

In a recent statement, NK Rattan, HMSI's VP for sales, marketing, planning & corporate affairs, said, "Without a mass motorcycle, we are No. 3; with the launch of the Yuga 110cc in May-end this year, we will be very close to No. 2."
