      GM to inject $100 mn in Halol plant, plans to launch 6 new cars by 2012

      General Motors India announced on Monday that it will roll-out six new car models in India over the period of next 2 years. In addition to this, the company will launch as many as 14 new variants of its existing car models in the country.

      "In the next 24 months, we will launch six new models of passenger cars and 14 new versions (of existing models)," General Motors India President and Managing Director Karl Slym said in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. He was speaking on the sidelines of the 5th Global Summit of Vibrant Gujarat.

      It will inject over $100 million (about Rs 450 crore) at its Halol plant in Gujarat, in a bid to enhance its annual production capacity to 1,05,000 units from existing 85,000 units. Currently, the company manufactures a range of its portfolio cars at this plant including entry level sedan Chevrolet Aveo, mid-size sedan Chevrolet Optra Magnum, premium sedan Chevrolet Cruze and multi utility vehicle (MUV) Chevrolet Tavera.

      Moreover, the company has planned to roll-out three light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in the Indian market from Chinese partner SAIC’s portfolio by the end of year 2012. Initially, the first LCV will be launched in the country the end of current year, followed by other two in next year.
