      GM launches new 1.2-litre, 'Smartech' engine in India

      The Indian subsidiary of the US based leading car maker General Motors has launched its latest 1.2-litre, 'Smartech' engine in the Indian market. The new engine has specially been developed for the Indian market at its Bangalore technical research center. The company now plans to inject as much as $400 million in its manufacturing units in India which would take its production capacity to 4,00,000 units from existing 2,00,000 units.

      As per a recent statement given by Mr. Karl Slym, president and general manager, GM India, the new engine was developed by engineers at its Bangalore centre, taking into consideration India's road conditions and the driving habits of the Indians.

      While further briefing about the new engine, Mr. Slym said, ''Our new engine is the result of an enormous R&D effort and thousands of hours of design, validation and testing. It incorporates engineering changes which optimize engine performance for Indian conditions through innovative design techniques. The engine demonstrates the true potential of GM's engineering and manufacturing capability across India.''

      The new 1.2-litre, 'Smartech' engine is not only better in fuel efficiency from its predecessors but also has a considerably low CO2 emission level.

      At present, GM Indian sells a number of passenger car models in the Indian market that comprises of small cars such as Chevrolet Spark and Beat, sedans such as Chevrolet Aveo, Oprta Magnum and Cruze, and luxury SUV Chevrolet Captiva.
