      General Motors India celebrates second anniversary of Talegaon Plant

      Plans to commission 160,000 unit Powertrain (Engine) manufacturing facility soon

      Pune: General Motors India today marked the completion of two years of successful operations of its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Talegaon in Pune, Maharashtra. With a total production capacity of 140, 000 per annum currently, GM India plans to commission 160,000-unit Powertrain (Engine) Plant at the Talegaon plant premises by the end of this year. This will be the first flexi-engine plant for General Motors globally wherein both petrol and diesel small car engines are going to be manufactured together.

      Speaking on the occasion, Mr. P Balendran, Vice-President, GM India said, “General Motors India has come a long way in the country and has received an overwhelming response to its best-in-class products registering record sales month-on-month. GM India’s manufacturing facility at Talegaon has played a vital role in matching the supply with the increasing demand expectations. With the recent addition of the second shift of production at the plant, we will continue to match up to expectations of providing the very best. The commissioning of the Powertrain plant will make it an integrated facility.

      Commissioned on September 2, 2008, Talegaon plant manufactures Chevrolet Spark and Chevrolet Beat. The Talegaon plant has clocked a total production of 84,349 units till 31st July 2010 and registered the highest production figures in April 2010 with 6856 units. The plant has also commenced in-house stamping.

      GM India is deeply committed towards the society and its role as a responsible corporate and undertakes several activities in terms of CSR on a regular basis in and around the plant. These include free medical camps for women and children of the nearby villages, blood donation drives and safety celebrations entailing safety oath by GM India employees. On the occasion of the World Environment Day, several initiatives were organized by GM India at the Talegaon plant ranging from tree plantation drives in the premises to quizzes and banner, slogan and poster-making competitions for all staff members. The company also held poster and drawing competitions for children from nearby schools. Over the last few years, GM India’s Talegaon plant has won some industry awards including the prestigious Golden Peacock Award for Occupational Health & Safety in 2010 since its commission two years ago.

      The initiatives undertaken by GM India reiterate its commitment to the Indian market as it continues to work on several product programs and capacity expansion measures to cater to the wide and varied requirements of its valued customers in India and fulfilling the ‘Chevrolet Promise’.
