Ford Motors, US based leading car maker, said on Tuesday that the company will be focusing on the manufacturing of small and low cost cars in the Indian market. The company is looking forward to make the Indian market a manufacturing hub for the Asia Pacific and African regions. Over the period of next three years, Ford India is planning to launch a number of new small car models in the Indian market.

Speaking to Reuters recently, Michael Boneham, president of Ford India, said, "We haven't been a major player (in India) because we weren't positioning ourselves in the segment where 70 percent of all cars are sold. We were focused more on issues outside of India and sending cars that were force-feeding the Indian consumer.” He added that it was a mistake and the company has learned from that mistake and now has a very robust plan for the business. India can expect a heavy focus on small cars from Ford."

Meanwhile, the company is working aggressively on its plans of establishing a new manufacturing facility in Gujarat, where it will be developing its future small car models, and will be exporting them a number of foreign markets from here.

According to Mr. Boneham, all the future Ford Indian portfolio vehicles that will be coming here will be global platforms, and will be designed and engineered keeping the global needs and requirements.
