Delhi government is now planning to tax car owners who own more than one car. It has intimated the Delhi High Court that such a step was important to reduce the worsening traffic conditions.

"To ease out the traffic on the roads, first and foremost step is to put an hold on the registration of the vehicles. And for those people who have more than two vehicles registered on their names, we are planning to slap more taxes on them in the form of road taxes, parking charges, area pricing and other such taxes," stated Traffic Police counsel Vikas Pahwa. He was addressing a bench of three judges comprising Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah, Justice S Muralidhar and Justice S. Ravinder Bhatt. The bench has asked the government to consider the plea owing to the fact that nearly 30 percent of the traffic on Delhi roads is cars and 62 percent are two-wheelers.

If the government decides to pass the bill, then car owners with more than one car will be levied extra taxes as per the rule. More details about the bill and actual rules are yet not clear but they will be primarily as road taxes or parking charges.
