At last, General Motors have announced engine options of 2013 Cadillac ATS, which was much in the news for its speculated engine configuration. The American car maker confirmed that this new age compact sports sedan will be put forth in three engine options. A new turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder motor with maximum power output of 270 horsepower and torque capacity of 350 Nm is one of the engine options that created a buzz in the market. The modern sport sedan is slated to be showcased officially at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Comprehensively engineered on past turbocharging application programs, 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder makes the sports sedan one of the most powerful vehicles in its category, offering an excellent engine capacity of 135 hp per litre. Don Butler, Cadillac Vice-President of Global Marketing explained the significance of the engine, saying, “This engine is the perfect match for the new ATS, which will be a refined performance luxury sedan. The 2.0T has an exceptionally smooth and responsive power curve that will make the ATS nimble, quick and fun to drive."

The auto maker worked on the project to finally bring up this development, producing a new 2.0-litre turbo engine with direct injection system and variable valve timing. Variable valve timing technology is further integrated with a twin scroll turbocharger that thrusts 20 pounds per square inch of air into the engine for production of 270 hp power output.

“It’s a mirrored version of the engine used in the Regal GS. The exhaust and intake are on opposite sides. You can’t do that without changing everything”, said Mike Anderson, General Motors’ Global Chief Engineer and Program Manager for 4-cylinder engines. However, the engine to be assembled in ATS will have a new cylinder block, crankshaft, valve train and combustion system. Revealing the changes in the engine, Anderson said, “The Regal GS engine was a high bar, but we wanted enhanced efficiency, better noise control and smoother operation.”

Furthermore, the auto maker claims that in terms of power and efficiency, friction of the engine has reduced by 16 per cent in comparison to its predecessor. A two-stage variable displacement oil pump has been incorporated in order to reduce friction by delivering oil needed during operations. A substantial turbocharger boost of 20 pounds per square inch and compression ratio of 9.5:1 ascertains high ratio for a forced-induction engine.

In addition to the new 2.0-litre turbo engine option, the upcoming Cadillac ATS will also be available in 2.5-litre 4-cylinder and 3.6-litre V6 engine. Details of these engine capacities were not revealed, although these capacities are expected to churn out high power output. In order to promote the sedan, the auto maker has released a video that details 270 horsepower turbo 4-cylinder engine assimilated in the 2013 Cadillac ATS.
